Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? How to Prime a New Coil

A burnt taste is the most common complaint with open-pod vape systems, and it is usually fixable. Here is why it happens and what to do. From the team at NW Vape Supply Co., Bothell, WA. Adults 21+ only.

Burnt vape taste: common questions

Why does my vape taste burnt?

The cotton around the coil is not getting enough e-liquid, so the coil heats dry cotton. Common reasons are a new coil that was not primed, a pod that is nearly empty, back-to-back puffs without a pause, or a coil that has simply worn out.

How do I prime a new coil or pod?

  1. Fill the pod with e-liquid, covering the fill holes if the pod has them.
  2. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes so the cotton soaks through.
  3. Take a couple of gentle puffs without firing at full power.

How do I stop it coming back?

  • Keep the pod above the low mark.
  • Pause between puffs so the cotton can re-soak.
  • Use a lower power mode if your device has one.
  • Use the e-liquid type your device is made for. See which e-liquid suits pod systems.

When should I replace the pod instead?

If the taste stays burnt after a fresh fill and a rest, replace it. Most coils last one to two weeks of daily use. See coil and pod replacement 101.

Does a sweet e-liquid burn coils faster?

Sweeter, thicker liquids can build residue on the coil sooner. If you notice it, replace the pod more often.
